The Omega-Rich Nut

There's a nut that has the same nutrients as those big yellow omega supplements you take in the morning? Turns out there are! Check out our fact sheet on walnuts.

1. There are two kinds of walnuts commonly eaten: the English Walnut, and the Black Walnut.

2. English walnuts originate from Persia. The trees grow well in some parts of the Middle East and Asia. They are also cultivated in parts of the U.S., such as California.  The English walnuts we sell come from California.

3. Black walnuts are indigenous to North America. They’re more difficult and costly to shell than ‘regular’ walnuts. As a result, trees are rarely cultivated commercially. Many of the black walnuts you buy today come from wild trees in Missouri, where they’re considered a weed tree and even grow on the side of the road. Our black walnuts come from a grower in Missouri.

4. Walnuts are one of three nuts mentioned in the Bible.

5. In China, pairs of walnuts were traditionally rotated in the palm of the hand as a status symbol.  Today, old pairs of these walnuts sometimes sell for tens of thousands of U.S. dollars, depending on who they belonged to.

6. Walnuts are naturally cholesterol free when raw, and often recommended by doctors as part of a healthy diet to lower your body’s cholesterol levels.

7. Walnuts have high levels of Omega-3 and Omega-6, two fatty acids our bodies need but aren’t capable of making. Many people obtain their omegas through fish oil supplementation. Walnuts also have the highest levels of serotonin of all nuts. Both serotonin and omega acids have been show to be mood enhancing.
